Dúrnost was a fortress hidden in the northern wastelands of Middle-earth.
History[]
Dúrnost was a fortress and stronghold in the Forodwaith.[1] At the dawn of the Second Age, it stood in a green valley. Sauron retreated to Dúrnost after the defeat of Morgoth, assembling a host of Orcs lead by Adar. Sauron attempted to proclaim himself their new ruler, but he was killed by Adar and the Orcs and his physical form was destroyed. As Sauron's body died, it released a wave of energy that forever changed the Forodwaith into an icy wasteland.[2]
Centuries later, Commander Galadriel and her company hunting for Sauron discovered the fortress. Inside, they found a sigil left behind (as they thought) as a marker for Orcs. The fortress also bore evidence that someone had been meddling with the forces of the Unseen World, including an Orc corpse fused into a wall.[1]
