The Dwarves were a hardy and ancient race who were at home in the mountains and underground.

Official Description[]

A tough and ancient people, dwarves stand taller than halflings but much shorter than Men or Elves. They are secretive in their ways and guard even their language from outsiders, but are well-known as lovers of stone, gems, and things shaped under the hands of craftsmen. After the First Age, many dwarves moved to Khazad-dûm – a grand subterranean kingdom built into the rocky depths of the Misty Mountains.

History[]

Creation[]

Dwarves were crafted by Aulë from the elements of fire and rock. The rock that lived within the Dwarves gave them a hunger for the eternal that resisted the pull of time. The fire embraced the truth that all things must one day be consumed.[2] The ancient fire is said to still burn in their hearts.[3]

First Age[]

The Dwarves are descendants of the Seven Fathers of the Dwarves. Durin I, the eldest of the Seven Fathers of the Dwarves, became the ancestor of all the kings of the Longbeards clan. Durin I was called Durin the Deathless, for his lifespan was much greater than the normal Dwarf.[4]

Dwarves of Khazad-dûm[]

The descendants of Durin I migrated to Khazad-dûm and built their kingdom into the rocky depths of the Misty Mountains. Their doors were once open to the creatures of Middle-earth, including the elves[5], despite embers of the dwarves' grudge against the elves lingering from the Elder Days.[6] However, as time passed, the dwarves grudge toward the elves and outside world deepened. They closed their doors to all elves while they continued to expand their territories. King Durin III rose to power among this time, with a son Durin IV that he expected to take over the kingdom of dwarves one day.[5]

Khazad-dûm received an unexpected visit from the elf Elrond, who brought with him an offer for the dwarves to work side-by-side with the elves in crafting a forger for Lord Celebrimbor.[7]

Characteristics[]

The dwarves are known for their stocky builds and tough, thrawn, laborious, natures and famous love of stone, gems, and all things created by craft. They are shorter then elves and men.[7]
