Forodwaith is the northern wastelands of Middle-earth. A cold, harsh climate, Forodwaith was dominated by mountains and icy glaciers. After the defeat of Morgoth in the First Age, his lieutenant Sauron fled to Forodwaith, stopping for a time in the stronghold fortress of Dúrnost. In the Second Age, the Elf Galadriel led a company to the Forodwaith in search of Sauron; although they discovered evidence that he had been there, the company was forced to return to Lindon after exceeding the mandate of their orders from High King Gil-galad.
History[]
At the dawn of the Second Age, Forodwaith was a green, flat land with large bodies of water surrounded by icy mountains. The fortress of Dúrnost stood in Forodwaith, where Sauron and Adar retreated to with a large number of Orcs after the defeat of Morgoth in the Great War. In Dúrnost, Sauron attempted to rally the Orcs under his rule, but he was betrayed by Adar leading to the physical death of his body. As Sauron died, the power released from his body swept over Forodwaith and turned it from a green land into a frozen wasteland.[1]
Centuries later, Galadriel led a company of Elves to Forodwaith in search of Sauron. They discovered the fortress of Dúrnost and evidence of his presence in the form of sigil left behind, and experiments that seemed to touch on the Unseen World.[2]
