Finrod in battle during the Great War
The Great War took place during the First Age between the Elves and Morgoth, who was aided by Orcs, Men, and other creatures of Middle-earth. The battle forced many to pick sides, and the ramifications of their choices affected their races for centuries to come.
History[]
Morgoth coveted the Silmarils, great jewels crafted by the Elven smith, Fëanor, that were infused with the light of the Two Trees of Valinor. Morgoth stole them,[1] and destroyed the Two Trees of Valinor. With the light of their home destroyed, a legion of Elves went to war, travelling from Valinor to Middle-earth.[2]
The war lasted for centuries, and left Middle-earth in ruin. Eventually, Morgoth was defeated and his Orcs scattered to all corners of Middle-earth under the command of his chief lieutenant, Sauron. Elves, such as Finrod, vowed to hunt down Sauron; however, Sauron found Finrod first and killed him. His mission was taken up by his sister, Galadriel, who hunted for signs of Sauron for many centuries.[2]
