The Grey Havens,[1] also known as Mithlond,[2] was an Elven settlement in Middle-earth[1] in the realm of Lindon.[3] Ships departed from the Grey Havens, bearing Elves west to Valinor,[1] never to return.[2]
During the Second Age, the Grey Havens was the home of the master craftsman and shipwright, Círdan, who oversaw and taught a number of artisans in his craft. Elrond fled to the Grey Havens with the Rings of Power after hoping to convince High King Gil-galad that they should be destroyed. After finding no support with the High King, Elrond sought out Círdan in the hopes that the oldest and wisest Elf in Middle-earth would understand the need to destroy the rings.[3]
