Khazad-dûm is the underground kingdom of the Dwarves, currently ruled by King Durin III. At Celebrimbor's behest, Elrond travels there to establish a stronger relationship between Dwarves and Elves.
Description[]
The Dwarven kingdom of Khazad-dûm lies beneath the Misty Mountains, and the entire realm is carved out of the mountain rock. Homes, like the one Prince Durin IV shares with his wife, Disa, and their children, are held up by stone pillars and lavishly decorated in gold and jewels. Magnificent lanterns keep the darkness at bay and bring light to the Dwarves.[2]
History[]
The descendants of Durin I, their first King and the eldest of the Seven Fathers of the Dwarves,[3] migrated to Khazad-dûm and built their kingdom into the rocky depths of the Misty Mountains. Their doors were once open to the creatures of Middle-earth, including the elves,[4] despite embers of the dwarves' grudge against the elves lingering from the Elder Days.[5] However, as time passed, the dwarves grudge toward the elves and outside world deepened. They closed their doors to all elves while they continued to expand their territories. King Durin III rose to power among this time, with a son Durin IV that he expected to take over the kingdom of dwarves one day.[4]
Monarchy[]
The rulers of Khazad-dûm are descendants of Durin I, the eldest of the Seven Fathers of the Dwarves, and ancestor of all the kings of the Longbeards clan.[3] The male descendants of Durin I carried his namesake, so the King of Khazad-dûm would always be called Durin, in an unbroken line of heirship. The Prince of Khazad-dûm bore a golden crest around his neck to indicate he was the heir to the King of Khazad-dûm.[6] The removal of the crest by the King indicated a removal of the Prince from the line of succession.[7]
