Morgoth is the Dark Lord who rose to power in the First Age. He destroyed the Two Trees of Valinor and wrecked havoc against Middle-earth. He assembled a large army, comprised of Orcs, Men, Balrogs Dragons, and all manner of Trolls. A great host of Elves left Valinor to oppose him on Middle-earth, fighting the Great War that eventually led to Morgoth's downfall.
Official Description[]
The Great Foe of all good things in Middle-earth. Morgoth is the first Dark Power to plague the world in the First Age, causing devastation and creating many twisted and monstrous creatures. Though ultimately defeated, his influence of evil lives on into the Second Age and beyond.
Biography[]
Morgoth, known as the Dark Power of the North, hailed from a bitterly cold realm in the northern reaches of Middle-earth.[2] Morgoth destroyed the Two Trees of Valinor, and stole the Simarils, leading to the Elves of Valinor crossing the Sundering Seas to wage war. Morgoth's defeat heralded the end of the First Age.[3] Morgoth forged for himself a crown, a symbol of his power and authority.[4] The crown held great symbolic meaning, and if a being was impaled on it then great spiritual harm would follow.[5]
During the Elder Days, Morgoth selected thirteen Elves to receive his blessing, a rebirth with the promise of power. They were led up to a dark and nameless peak, where they were chained and left alone to hunger and thirst. After a time, Morgoth sent his servant, Sauron, to offer them wine.[6]
Powers and Abilities[]
Morgoth was a being of titanic power. He killed the Two Trees with his powers, corroding them by running fire magic through them.[3] He also made the first orcs, using elf thralls as the templates to craft them.[6] Sauron made pretense that Morgoth tortured him,[7] and also claimed that he was totally being controlled by Morgoth's will, denying his actual role as a willing agent.[8]
He was also a mighty crafter, making the Orc Sigil Hilt hailed not as a mere blade but a "Power"[9] (an all but indestructible item[10][11] that was powerful enough to be used in a mechanical ritual to imbue a river with the power to make the volcano it flowed into erupt)[10] and his own crown,[4] which aside from being a sign of lordship over all forces of darkness, could be used to wound and weaken even Sauron[6] and nearly killed Galadriel.[5]
