103 Saurons Sigil

The Sigil is recurring motif and brand that Galadriel searches for, its presence convincing her that her quarry, Sauron, is close at hand.

Official Description[]

A simple marking, but a sinister one. Who left it? And for what purpose?

Design[]

The sigil was a simple design that allowed Orcs to replicate it easily enough, painting it on their shields in blood.[1]

History[]

After the Elves defeated Morgoth, his lieutenant Sauron rose to lead the Orcs and dark days. Finrod went to war, though he was defeated by Sauron, who carved a sigil into his flesh. Finrod's sister Galadriel saw the sigil and vowed revenge against the man who killed her brother. She spent centuries tracking him and his Orcs across Middle-earth until they were nothing but a whispered rumor.[2]

Eventually, Galadriel and her company arrived in Forodwaith, a desolate and frozen wasteland. They discovered a fortress, and inside Galadriel found the same sigil that was carved into her brother by Sauron; she believed it is a marker, left for Orcs to follow. She relayed her findings to Elrond and High King Gil-galad, but they disagreed with her belief that the sigil meant anything of importance.[2]

On the island of Númenor, Galadriel visits the Hall of Lore where Elendil shows her the account of a human spy retrieved from an enemy dungeon. She recognizes the symbol instantly, then finally pieces together this is no sigil, but a map of the Southlands. The inscription accompanying the map is in Black Speech, which Galadriel reads fluently. It is a plan by which to create a realm of their own, where evil would not only endure, but thrive. The plan is to be enacted in the event of Morgoth’s defeat and helmed by his successor, whom Galadriel knows is Sauron.[3]
