The White Tree

The White Tree of Númenor, also called Nimloth,[1] is a large tree with beautiful white petals located in the island kingdom of Númenor, outside the royal court. It is a descendant of the Two Trees of Valinor, having been a seedling of the great tree Galathilion.[1]

The Faithful - those who remain loyal to the Valar and the old ways - believe that when the petals of the White Tree fall, it is no idle thing, but the Valar themselves crying. It is a living reminder that their eyes and judgment are ever upon the Númenóreans.

History[]

Queen-Regent Míriel reminded Elendil what the White Tree represented - the judgment and eyes of the Valar. If the petals were to ever fall, it would be as if the Valar themselves cried for a decision the Númenóreans made. Elendil didn't believe it was to live guessing about signs and portents.[2]

The petals falling from the White Tree is part of Míriel's vision signifying the end of Númenor. She believes that aiding Galadriel in a war in the Southlands will bring about this vision. She sends the Elf away, but reverses her decision when the white petals fall like snowflakes over the island.[3]
